CONVENTIONS, AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS The 22nd Spanish Convention of Fantasy and Science Fiction, HispaCon will take place in Cádiz from the 5thNovember to the 7th November 2004 with Juan Miguel Aguilera, Javier Negrete and Andrzej Sapkowski as Guests of Honour and Angel Torres Quesada, Miquel Barceló, Rodolfo Martínez, Santiago Eximeno, Elia Barceló, Rafael Marín, Jesús Merino, Rafael Fonteriz, Luis G. Prado, José Faraldo, Joaquín Revuelta, Javier Cuevas and Alfonso Merelo as main assistants. The 5th AznarCon will be held at the HispaCon too. The Ignotus awards in their different categories will go to some of the following nominees: Best Spanish novel:

Asturcon 2004 had Andreas Eschbach, M. John Harrison, Juan Miguel Aguilera, León Arsenal, Rodolfo Martínez, Rafael Marín, Víctor Conde, José Antonio Cotrina and Elia Barceló as special guests. It was held at the XVII Semana Negra (Gijón) between the 9th July and the 12th July. The Semana Negra, from the 9th July to the 18th July, had the presence of José Carlos Somoza, Lolo Rico, José Manuel Fajardo, Francisco González Ledesma, Gilbert Haefs, Fernando Marías, Andreu Martín, Robert Wilson and many others. http://www.drimar.com/asturcon Kosmopolis 04 was held at Barcelona from the 14th to the 19th September with the participation of Joe Haldeman, Kathleen Ann Goonan, Elia Barceló, Javier Negrete, Juan Miguel Aguilera, Miquel Barceló and Marcial Souto. http://www.cccb.org/kosmopolis/indexcat.htm The 7th Espatrek (Spanish Star Trek Convention) will take place in Cartagena from the 15th October to the 17th October and the presence of Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar in Star Trek TNG), Roger Nygard (director of the movies Trekkies and Trekkies 2) and Cels Piñol. The 10th EstelCon (convention of the Spanish Tolkien Society, STE) was held at Castalla (Alicante) between the 18th and the 21st March 2004. http://www.sociedadtolkien.org http://estelcon2004.linfoma.net Pascual Enguídanos, writer of many of the 1950s books Luchadores del Espacio (Editorial Valenciana) was homaged in Lliria (Valencia) last May. Pedro A. García Bilbao, Agustín Jaureguízar and Alfons Cervera participated in the event. The Tàpies Foundation in Barcelona had a very interesting activity during March and April called STITCH AND SPLIT. Selves and Territories in Science Fiction. Nalo Hopkinson, Ken MacLeod, Juan Miguel Aguilera, Miquel Barceló or the Catalan Star Trek Club were some of the participants. A second episode of the event took place in Seville during May. Other awards went to Jiro Taniguchi, Manel Fontdevila, Luis Durán and Fermín Solís. Ediciones Minotauro was awarded as the Best European Publisher at the EuroCon 2004 which was held in Plovdiv (Bulgaria). Glasgow will hold the Eurocon (and Woldcon) 2005 and Kiev will be the host of the Eurocon 2006. León Arsenal won the first Minotauro Award for Fantastic Literature with Máscaras de Matar. http://www.edicionesminotauro.com The winner of the XIIIth edition of the Fantastic Literature Awards Pablo Rido was Pedro Pablo Garcia Mary with his work El Partidillo. The short tale El día que hicimos la Transición from Ricard de la Casa and Pedro Jorge Romero has been included in the anthology Year’s Best SF 9 compiled by David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer. This tale was translated by Yolanda Molina-Gavilán and part of another anthology called Cosmos Latinos. From Cosmos Latinos has been selected Los embriones de violeta by Angélica Gorodischer, too. Memoria de la novela popular. Homenaje a la colección Luchadores del Espacio has been published by the Valencia University in the collection Fòrum de debats. The AEFCFT has began with this book a new line of cooperation with universities and other institutions. The writer Alfonso Arizmendi Regaldie (Alf. Regaldie) died on the 12 January 2004. He was one of the most important Luchadores del Espacio authors and wrote more than six hundred books during his life. Born in 1991 Arizmendi began to write for Editorial Valenciana with Works like Pánico en la Tierra, Piratas del espacio, Errantes en el infinito, Destructores de mundos o Si los mundos chocan and then moved to Bruguera, Cíes and Toray to paricipate in collections like Oeste, Servicio Secreto or La Conquista del Espacio where he wrote Atacados en el espacio and Proyección a otra galaxia among others. Christian Bale, Jennifer Jason Leigh, John Sharian, Michael Ironside or Aitana Sánchez are some of the actors of the Spanish science fiction movie The Machinist.
