Conventions, Awards and Exhibitions CONVENTIONS, AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS The 21st Spanish Convention of Fantasy and Science Fiction, HispaCon, was held at Getafe (Madrid) from the 17th October to the 19th October 2003 with M. John Harrison, Javier Negrete and Angel Torres Quesada as Guests of Honour. The HispaCon had important lecturers as Luis Alberto de Cuenca, Juan Miguel Aguilera, Rafael Marín, César Mallorquí, Rodolfo Martínez, Lorenzo Silva, José Carlos Somoza, Ángel García Galiano, Sue Burke and Lawrence Schimel. Domingo Santos and Pascual Enguídanos (George H. White) received two Gabriel Awards during the official dinner for their careers (as Enguídanos wasn’t in Getafe, Agustín Jaureguízar took him the trophy to Lliria (Valencia)). The 5th AznarCon was held at the HispaCon too with Alfonso Seijas, José Carlos Canalda, Pedro A. García Bilbao, Agustín Jaureguízar and Domingo Santos as main assistants. The Ignotus awards in their different categories went to the following works: Best Spanish novel: Cinco días antes - Carlos F. Castrosín - Juan José Aroz And these were the Special Awards: Special Gabriel award: Pascual Enguídanos Domingo Santos Award: La niña muerta - José Antonio Cotrina Melocotón de Plata for the Best novel: Vigésima Tierra - Daniel Mares The next HispaCon will take place in Cádiz. Asturcon 2003 had Andrezj Sapkowski, TimPowers, Richard Calder, Josep Mª Beá, Elia Barceló, Javier Negrete, Julián Díez, Rodolfo Martínez and Rafael Marín as special guests. It was held at the XVI Semana Negra (Gijón) between the 4th July and the 7th July. The Semana Negra, from the 4th July to the 13th July, had the presence of Jordi Bernet, Carlos Giménez, Charles Burns, Valerio Manfredi, Lorenzo Silva, José Carlos Somoza and many others. http://www.drimar.com/asturcon
The 1950s books Luchadores del Espacio (Editorial Valenciana) were homaged in the Valencia University last May. José Carlos Canalda, Pedro A. García Bilbao, Agustín Jaureguízar and some of these mythical books writers and artists (Ramón Brotons (Walter Carrigan), José Caballer (Larry Winters), Pascual Enguídanos (George H. White), Arturo Rojas (Red Arthur) and José Luis Macías (creator of many covers for the books)) participated in the event.
The 6th Espatrek (Spanish Star Trek Convention) was held at the University of Alicante between the19th and the 21st September 2003. The 9th EstelCon (convention of the Spanish Tolkien Society, STE) was held at Granada between the 2nd and the 5th October 2003. The next EstelCon will take place in Elche (Alicante). http://www.sociedadtolkien.org
Josep Maria Beà Font (Historias de taberna galáctica) won the Gran premio of the 22nd International Barcelona Comic Convention, Salón del Cómic de Barcelona, the other awards went to: Best foreign Comic published in Spain during 2002: David Boring by Daniel Clowes
On the other hand Expocómic 2003 (Madrid International Barcelona Comic Convention) had this awards:
José Luis Macías (creator of a lot of covers for the Luchadores del Espacio books) and Jesús Huguet (from the 7 Monos group) had two interesting exhibitions of their works in Mislata (Public Library) and Valencia (Sala Micalet). The title of Macías exhibition was Del libro al cómic and the Huguet’s one was titled Obra Gráfica. Rafael Marín and Galaxia (the Spanish magazine directed by León Arsenal) were awarded as Best Translator and Best Magazine at the EuroCon 2003. This is one of the most important fantasy and science fiction events in Europe and this time was held in Turku (Finland). http://crisei.blogalia.com
The winner of the XIIth edition of the Fantastic Literature Awards Pablo Rido was Nuria Calderón García-Botey for her work Dancing with an Angel.
Traficants de Llegendes, by Jordi Font-Agustí (Barcelona), won the UPC Science Fiction Award 2003. The special mention was ex aequo for Sueños de Interfaz, by Vladimir Hernández Pacín (Barcelona) and Polvo Rojo, by José Miguel Sánchez (Cuba). The jury also mentioned Factoría Cinco, by José Antonio Bermúdez Santos (Sevilla), Without Love, by David Snowdon (UK), Carne, by Daniel Mares Martín (Madrid) and The Epsilon Eridani Alternative, by Elizabeth H. Groundwater (USA). The UPC mention was ex aequo for Vlad Harkov Y La Puerta Negra, by Manuel González González (Barcelona) and El Mago De Gondlaar, by Ángel Luis Miranda Barreras (Barcelona). La mirada de las furias y El mito de Er (both by Javier Negrete) have been published in France by L'Atalante, meanwhile Lágrimas de Luz (by Rafael Marín) has been published in Poland. El último deseo del jíbaro y otras fantasmagorías (Gran Diógenes/Valdemar) is the name of the new anthology by Vicente Muñoz Puelles. Asimov Magazine is being published once more in Spanish. Domingo Santos is the director and Ediciones Robel the new publisher.
Mundos en la eternidad, from Javier Redal and Juan Miguel Aguilera has been published in France. Aguilera’s new novel Rihla has had a French edition before the Spanish one.
Las fuentes perdidas (La Factoría de Ideas) and the anthology Mala racha (AJEC) are the new books by José Antonio Cotrina in 2003. Moreover AJEC has published Mentes de hielo y noche by Eduardo Vaquerizo, Una luz en la noche by Daniel Mares and another anthology titled Cuentos fantásticos de la España profunda.

The annual Assembly of the AEFCF was held on the 19th October 2003, at Getafe (Madrid). Pablo Herranz will be the new President from 2004. Among others, decisions were taken to finish AEFCF’s life, starting the AEFCFT´s one from the 1st January 2004. The AEFCFT has made some changes to upgrade the association´s web site and has a new internet address. For those who can read Spanish, the site is at:
The short film Déjàvu, from Jesús García was the best one in the 7th Hollywood Film Festival and will compete in the Oscar 2004 automatically. Déjàvu is the fantastic story of two women, one from tre XIX century and the other from the XXI (Ruth Núñez and Nadia Casado) who are prisoners in the same house.
Luis G. Prado, publisher and agent of Víctor Conde, José Antonio Cotrina, Rafel Marín, Rodolfo Martínez, Ángel Torres Quesada and Eduardo Vaquerizo, has created an English language website to promote these writers books. The site is at: http://www.bibliopolis.org/agency.htm
